So and Such

Gap-fill exercise

Observe the following sentences:





1. We were very lucky to have such a competent guide.

2. We were very lucky to have a guide so competent.

3. We were very lucky to have so competent a guide.


‘Such’ is followed by a noun (or noun phrase), ‘so’ by an adjective.

The word order in sentence number 3 is less common than in sentences 1 and 2.






Insert ‘so’ or ‘such’ into the following sentences:

1. The book includes the views of people as Max Johnson.

2. Max has been worried it would turn out to be a wild goose chase.

3. I wonder why Colley adopted an unfriendly attitude.

4. The use of tactics is extremely unfair.

5. Melanie would never be foolish a woman as to sign a contract like Judy’s.
