Unit 7 / Listening 3B

Now listen again and read as you listen.

Gina: Wow, that was a stroke of luck, Sophie coming up with that file!

Tom: Yes, we must think of an appropriate way of thanking her.

Gina: Absolutely.

Tom: Right let's have a look through this file and see what we can learn from it.

Gina: ( reading ) So, Mr and Mrs Fenster... a Canadian couple in their thirties... they live in Vancouver . He's a teacher and she's a librarian. There's even a photo of the pair of them.

Tom: We need to prove that their link to the hospital, or to Beautiful Babes, is genetic experimentation though.

Gina: Well, there are the results of various tests. Blood tests by the look of it. Rather a lot of medical jargon. Maybe we should have asked Sophie to explain it to us in more detail. Unless you can understand it better than me.

Tom: Hmm… No, not really. Can't make head or tail of it, in fact. You're right, maybe Sophie can shed some light on it for us.

Gina: There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for the Fensters to be dealing with a modelling agency. And no mention of Jason Freedman or Robert Gruninger… Oh my goodness!

Tom: What is it?

Gina: Look at this receipt. It's for a cheque. Look at the amount!

Tom: 50, 000 U.S Dollars; quite impressive.

Gina: Especially for a teacher and a librarian.

Tom: This proves that the Fensters paid for a service of some sort.

Gina: Not necessarily. There's just a number on the receipt, no reference to Beautiful Babes or any other company. And nothing to say what they got in return for the money.

Tom: You're right, it could just be a receipt for a deposit they put in a bank or in a savings fund somewhere. Unusual, though, isn't it, for a receipt to bear no company name or other information? All very anonymous and secretive.

Gina: Highly suspicious, if you ask me. You know what? We're not going to learn a lot more from this file. But our next stop should be Canada so that we can meet the Fensters and talk to them face to face.

Tom: Hmm… Nairobi to Vancouver … I doubt if there's anything direct. But there's a travel agency just next to the hotel. We can pop in there and find out.

Gina: While we're at it, we should fax the receipt number to Max. He might be able to trace it.

Tom: Good idea. Look, I'll hail this taxi...
